NSW: Knife-wielding man keeps police at bay for three hours

A man armed with a knife has barricaded himself in a south-west Sydney house for aboutthree hours before surrendering to police.

Police say residents in the Leumeah neighbourhood were evacuated during the siege lastnight because of fears the man might ignite a gas cylinder in the house.

The 47-year-old forced an elderly woman to leave the Emerson Avenue house before policewere called to the property about 7pm (AEST).

Police negotiators were brought in and the man left the house around 9.45pm, approachingofficers on the front lawn.

He was arrested and charged with assault and use of a weapon to avoid apprehension.

The man has been refused bail and is to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today.
