Fed: Howard says IT to drive unemployment lower

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says information technology should help drive Australia's
unemployment rate even lower.

Mr HOWARD was speaking in Launceston at the launch of a $40 million intelligent island
program -- funded by the second partial sale of Telstra -- to develop Tasmania's information
technology industry.

He says yesterday's job figures show the unemployment outlook is the best for a decade,
but the jobless rate is still too high.

National unemployment fell to a decade-low of 6.3 per cent in July. Unemployment also
fell in Tasmania, although it has a jobless rate of 8.7 per cent.
