Fed: ALP says will look favourably on legislation

CANBERRA, April 30 AAP - Labor today said it would look favourably on federal governmentlegislation to indemnify doctors until June 30 as a result of the United Medical Protection(UMP) crisis.

"On the principle, if the government introduces legislation to indemnify doctors fromyesterday until the 30 June, we will obviously give very favourable consideration to that,"

Opposition health spokesman Stephen Smith told reporters.

"But in the usual way, we'd like to see the legislation first."

Australia's biggest medical insurer, UMP, yesterday moved to appoint a provisional liquidator.

Prime Minister John Howard said the government was prepared to legislate to back itsguarantee to cover medical indemnity claims that might arise from procedures carried outfrom today until June 30, and has said the government is not considering a levy on doctors.
